Dear Published Writers, and Aspiring Book Writers
My name is Patrick Ang (Contact Tel: 65-98531380)
Dan Poynter calls me a Book Shepherd. My mission is to help writers to get their books published.
I used to be the Publishing Director at MPH Magazines, responsible for the publishing of magazine titles, like FEMALE, NUYOU, TORQUE and SILVER KRIS, the inflight magazine of Singapore Airlines and other contracted commissioned books.
Today I am more interested in shepherding and working with writers and wannabe writers, to self publish their books. I now have a Ghost Writer, an Editor, a Graphic Designer, a Photographer, an Illustrator, a Printer and a Book Distributor Team to support me in producing and distributing your books.
I am more interested in encouraging any one with a story to share, to write their first book. Writing a book is not about having a good command of English. More importantly it is about having a unique personal story to share, or developing your own creativity and imagination to spin a story, or having a domain knowledge or expertise to teach others.
It does not even have to be a thick big book. Many small A5 size books are not more than 160 - 200 pages. Some of the best sellers like ‘One Minute Manager’, ‘Who Moved My Cheese’, “Fish’, ‘The Greatest Miracle in the World’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Book of Humour’ are actually quite small books, which you can finish reading in one single sitting over an evening of giving up TV.
These titles became big hit best sellers when they were launched .
If you are a starting wannabe writer, and all you want to do is to share your life journey, as you would in writing a daily blog or journal, you are already on your way to creating a book for yourself. It would be nice if your book became an international best seller, but even if you write and sold just 3000 copies in a month, in Singapore, it would be considered a national best seller.
How about writing your own life story to leave behind a lasting legacy for your family, children and grand children. The Old Testament stories from the bible were passed down orally over many generations, before it became enshrined as a permanent written record. Shouldn’t you be passing down your own life story to the next generation too, before your book dies with you?
Other than the epitaph on your tombstone, how else would your future generation remember who mum and dad, grandpa and grandma were like as living persons. Write and leave behind your story legacy. It will be more lasting than the title deeds to your real estate, which you bequeath to your children and grandchilden to fight over.
How about sponsoring and encouraging your own teenage children to write a book about their friends, their own hope and dreams. It will help to stir their imaginations, express their feelings of joy and aspirations. All children’s dreams start with their wildest imaginations.
Writing even a small book is an opportunity to give expresssion to your creativity, and being able to share your life with others is the best gift you can impart to others. From young students, to housewives, to teachers who teaches their students on essay and short story writing, to professionals who want to share their knowledge and expertise, to senior citizens and grandfathers’ and grandmothers’ stories, anyone can write a book with the help of a ghost writer and book editor.
I am now a senior citizen myself in my mid sixties, and if I do not keep my mind stimulated and mentally active, I will turn into a living zombie. I love to read. I love to write. I love to coach. And I want to motivate and encourage every Singaporean with a memorable story to share, to learn how to write a book. Let it be a memoir of your life before you go.
You too can be like Miss Oh Siew May, a vocally handicapped person who wrote a book called ‘Scaling Walls’ chronicling her triumph over adversities and incredible challenges, and now makes a dignified living out of her book.
Who knows? You could be the next Og Mandino who wrote inspirational books, which have sold over 50 million copies to date. Or Dale Carnegie. Or Norman Vincent Peale. Or Rick Warren. Or Robert Kiyosaki. Or Donald Trump. All of them international million dollar best selling authors.
Or you could simply co-write a book with your grandmother on a cookbook titled ‘Grandma’s Secret Recipes from three generations past’ Or maybe grandpa’s own ‘East Side Story’ on how he courted grandma and brought up the kids starting from just a ‘Kopi, Roti, Kaya, Mee and Me’ stall. (That was how Polar Puffs and Cakes, Yakun Kaya and Old Chang Kee became household brand names today). What will your own business success story be?
Katong Laksa, or Jalan Kayu Roti Prata, or Bread Talk or Sakae Sushi?
So my dear writer friends, if you want to learn how to write a book, and don’t know where to begin, I would highly recommend you to sign up TODAY for the two day seminar workshop with Dan Poynter at the end of this month, 29-30 June, organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore.
The cost is only $490 per person, if you come alone. But of you can bring another friend to sign up with you, you only pay $390 per person. It is unlikely that you will be able to register at this price again as it is being supported by the MDA and the NLB this time.
The first time I did this with Dan Poynter, the two day workshop was priced at $1500 per pax. So at only $390 it is a virtual gift from us to you, to encourage you to be a book writer.
